Life-between-lives hypnotherapy
Life-between-lives hypnotherapy is a method of deep hypnosis that aims to recover memories of the period between death in one life and birth in the next. It was developed by the American hypnotherapist Michael Newton and described in his books Journey of Souls and Destiny of Souls.[1][2]
The method
Established scholarshipSessions are long, often three to four hours. The client is first taken through a past-life regression to a death scene, and then asked to describe what follows. Newton trained other practitioners, and the organization he founded continues as The Newton Institute.
What clients describe
Research findingNewton reported that his clients, whatever their beliefs, gave consistent accounts. The recurring elements were:
- Being met after death by a guide
- A period of rest and review
- Returning to a group of souls at a similar stage of development
- Appearing before a council of wiser beings
- Choosing the next life, including the body, the family, and the main challenges
Newton presented this consistency as the principal reason to take the accounts seriously.
Standing as evidence
Open questionThe method has not been tested independently, and its claims are of a kind that is hard to check. The specific concerns are these.
- One investigator. Newton conducted the sessions, asked the questions, and selected the cases. His questions followed a structure that reflected what earlier clients had said.
- Shared sources. After his books sold widely, later clients and practitioners knew what to expect.
- Hypnosis. All the cautions that apply to hypnotic recall apply here with greater force, because nothing reported can be compared against a record. See The reliability of hypnotic regression.
Consistency among accounts gathered this way is real, and it is also what suggestion and shared expectation would produce. The consistency alone cannot tell the two apart.
Relation to Universal Panpsychism
Framework claimThe account of the time between lives in The Bridge is close to Newton's. It describes guides, soul families, a Council of Elders, and planning sessions in which the next life is chosen (chapters 4 and 6).[3] The phrase "life between lives" is not used in the text.
The Bridge states the limitation itself: "Science cannot validate claims about soul guides, pre-birth planning, or consciousness existing beyond the body."[3] On this wiki these claims are labeled as framework claims.
